Cholesterol tests measure the cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL content in your bloodstream. Cholesterol and Triglycerides are the two main fat groups in the blood. Elevated levels of both can cause arteriosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, thyroid, liver and pancreatic disease. A high content of LDL increases your risk for heart disease, while a high content in HDL helps lower your risk for heart disease.
Cholesterol Test
Lipid Panel/Profile
This test is a blood test that measures the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in your bloodstream. This test can help determine your risk of plaque buildup in your arteries. This test is important because high cholesterol rarely shows signs or symptoms. It's recommended to get your cholesterol tested every five years after you turn 20.
Cholesterol Ranges
Your total cholesterol, the total amount of cholesterol in your blood, must be less than 200mg/dL to be considered "desirable" 200-239mg/dL is considered borderline high and anything 240mg/dL or above is considered high
Your LDL should be less than 100mg/dL to be considered "optimal" 100-129mg/dL is considered near/above optimal, 130-159mg/dL is considered borderline high, 160-189mg/dL is considered high and anything higher than 190mg/dL is very high. The healthy HDL level is 60mg/dL and higher. At this level it is considered protective against heart disease. 40-59mg/dL is okay, but the higher the better. Anything less than 40mg/dL is a major risk for heart disease.
